Underwater Digital Cameras

Fuji Finepix XP10There are many different types of underwater digital cameras available and we are not only talking about the numbers of manufacturers like Nikon, Fuji or Canon etc. There are cameras that are waterproof, cameras that need to be inserted into a specific case to take into water and there are cameras that can go underwater if they are housed in a specialised underwater camera housing.  The type of camera you will want to take underwater will all depend on the type of photographs you want to take, what you will do with the underwater images when completed, the depth you want to go and what else you would like to do with the camera when not in the water. Let me explain these in more detail.

Taking underwater pictures while on a two week holiday may not be your number one priority for your holiday. You probably want to take snaps of the tourist sights you visit or the scenery around you. Therefore you would more than likely not to want a dedicated underwater camera and prefer a simple digital camera that you can take underwater if you get the chance to go snorkeling or even scuba diving. I should point out however that although you can have a camera that would be suitable for both these water activities if you do want to take your camera down to scuba diving depths then you will have another consideration that you won’t when snorkeling.

There are many underwater digital cameras available not that are termed waterproof that in fact you can take snorkeling and will remain Canon PowerShot D10water tight to 3m or more in depth. All the major digital camera manufactures have at least one waterproof camera that is suitable for taking in the water while snorkeling. For example the Fuji Finepix XP10 gets great reviews and can be used down to 10 feet or 3m. Similarly the Canon powerShot D10 is termed waterproof but in fact is able to go down to 33 feet/10 metres, this is far beyond the conventional snorkeling depth. Both these cameras are not sold specifically for snorkeling and are in fact part of an outdoor range of cameras that withstand extreme cold and shock as well as water. If you are an active person who enjoys sailing, skiing, climbing or kitesurfing then you should really consider buying one of these types of cameras to have with you at all times.

Now we have discussed the holiday type of digital camera that you may want to take underwater we can take it one step further. If you plan to scuba dive with your digital camera then you will need something a lot more waterproof than those mentioned above. The good thing is however long gone are the days when you needed a specialist underwater camera. These days you simple need to buy a digital camera that has a compatible underwater housing or even look at the more expensive option of getting an underwater camera housing for your present camera. There are far too many different models of camera and underwater cases to mention on here but you should consider Fuji cameras and Canon digital cameras if you want to start serious underwater photography.
